About us

Dr Emily Mills

I’m Dr Emily Mills, Clinical Psychologist and founder of Empowerment Psychology. Since 2008, I’ve dedicated my career to helping people reconnect with their inner strength and rediscover the parts of themselves that have been silenced by trauma, stress, or self-doubt. My practice is built on the belief that healing isn’t about fixing what’s “broken,” but rather coming home to the wholeness that’s already within you.

Over the past sixteen years, I’ve worked across community mental-health and private practice settings with children, adolescents, and adults. My therapeutic approach blends evidence-based methods with a deep respect for the mind–body–spirit connection that underpins lasting change.

I’m a Level 2 Internal Family Systems (IFS) trained practitioner, integrating IFS with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other trauma-informed modalities. Through this work, I help clients build compassionate relationships with their inner world—learning to listen to, rather than battle against, the parts that have been trying to keep them safe.

I hold a Doctor of Psychology (Clinical) from James Cook University, and an undergraduate degree from Griffith University. I’m a fully registered and clinically endorsed psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, a Fellow of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists, and an advocate for accessible, high-quality care across rural and regional Queensland.

At Empowerment Psychology, therapy is more than talking—it’s a space to slow down, reconnect, and remember who you are beneath the layers of survival. It’s where evidence-based science meets grounded spirituality, and where your healing journey becomes a return to your true Self.

ABOUT US

Dr Emily Mills

Hello, I'm Dr Emily Mills, founder of Empowerment Psychology! My goal in having a psychology practice was to create a safe space where healing, growth and transformation can occur. I strongly believe that everyone has the ability to heal themselves with the right tools and experiences. I believe that my job is the best job in the world as I am allowed and privileged to walk with people in their time of need to help process and understand their realities and make changes into the people they would like to become. I am so blessed to share in these journeys to healing on a daily/hourly basis. I am honoured that you have chosen Empowerment Psychology to start this journey with.

I am a clinical psychologist with over 12 years experience, working in community mental health and the private sector. I completed my Doctor of Psychology right here in Townsville at James Cook University, after completing my undergraduate at Griffith University on the Gold Coast.  I am a registered psychologist and endorsed as a Clinical Psychologist. A Clinical Psychologist has specialist training in psychological assessment and therapy with diagnosed psychiatric and/or mental health disorders. I have always strived to achieve a psychology practice that feels like you are safe to explore your challenges with someone who really cares.

I have an interest in trauma, attachment and dissociation, with experience in child, youth and adult mental health. I work with techniques such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

I am passionate about rural mental health and had my own radio show in Moranbah which is focused on providing mental health guidance to the community.

I also regularly facilitate group training, by providing group training to the Mater Hospital Townsville on a monthly basis.

Empowerment Psychology is a safe space. I would love to be able to help you overcome challenges and begin the process of empowerment. Get in contact today.

What To Expect

1. Reaching Out for Help

Once you have decided to seek help and we have received your referral, either from your GP or other source my admin will contact you to make an intake appointment.

2. Getting to Know You

At the intake appointment your psychologist will ask you lots of questions to find out what is going on and to formulate a treatment plan.

3. Formulation and Treatment Planning

At the end of the session a treatment plan will be agreed upon. It is important to remember that you are the best person to know what feels right for you and if the treatment sounds like a good fit.

4. Treatment

After the intake appointment the next appointment will start the therapy process. Sessions are typically 50 minute sessions. This will typically involve a check in to see any issues that have arisen since last session. Your psychologist will teach you skills and support you to achieve your mental health goals identified above.

5. Relapse Prevention

These sessions teach you how to maintain the positive changes you have made.
